Structure, Style, and Title

The following YouTubes will help you structure your research paper, and give you guidance on crafting your Title Page.

Introduction

Plan your paper to gain the attention and recognition that you deserve!

Figure 1. Your Title Page should be professional, not “student-style”!

This vid walks you through how to create a professional-style Title Page.

Structuring Your Paper

Cultivate your paper’s structure to engage your reader and build depth as your reader progresses.

Here’s a Template

This MS Wd(TM) .docx file is a TEMPLATE for your paper or report. The most useful thing about this is that whole challenge of numbering pages is SOLVED. The template has the right page numbering for the three requirements:

  • The Title Page should not be (is NEVER!) numbered,
  • The Abstract and Table of Contents (and any other “Table” pages, e.g., a Table of Figures, etc.) should be numbered with small Roman letters (e.g., your Abstract is on page i, your Table of Contents is on page ii).
  • Your actual text (beginning with your Introduction (or Problem Statement) starts on page 1.

Clarity Gets You Readership

When someone is deciding whether or not to read your paper, they are making a decision based on how relevant your work is to their particular needs. This means that your reader must determine – very fast – exactly what your paper offers.

There is no ream for generalities. Your Abstract and your Problem Statement (usually included within your Introduction) must clearly and immediately convey what you have to offer.

Your Abstract: When Someone Decides to Read

Your Abstract is probably the most important section in that your reader will decide on whether or not to read based on the first few sentences of your Abstract.

Your Problem Statement

I typically rewrite my Problem Statement (that is, the opening paragraphs of my Introduction) several times. That’s because our Problem Statement evolves as we seek clarity in describing what we’ve done.
